Shadow’s back story has its own page.
To changelings, Shadow is very tall (over 6 feet) and scary thin. Though she looks like tiny brittle bones with a thin layer of skin, she moves with a liquid grace. Her skin is midnight black with an oil-on-water sheen. Her hair is smokey gray, wafting around her head much like smoke. Her face is triangular, with a broad forehead and pointy chin. Her ears and nose are small and unremarkable. Her mouth is small, with pointy teeth. Her eyes are huge and bulbous and a startling bright blue. Her fingers are long and seem to have an extra joint, with clawlike fingernails in the deep red of old blood.
To humans, Shadow looks like a “normal” African American young woman, though somewhat on the tall and thin side (5’9", 110 lbs). (This despite the fact that she was born a white girl.) Her hair is an iron gray short afro and her eyes are dark brown.
Shadow is a member of the Winter Court in New Orleans. Changelings will notice a chill in the air when she passes and the faint scent of distant wood smoke.
Shadow was a vain, arrogant teen who was aware of her own beauty and used it to fascinate and humiliate others. This is what brought her to the attention of a passing Gentry, whom she laughed at because he noticed her flirting and she told him he was too old for her. He took her and punished her arrogance by banishing her to his servant’s quarters, where working flawlessly and invisibly were the absolute requirements. He made her a Darkling, as all his servants were, and anything they did that caught his attention was instantly punished. She learned to be invisible, but kept her smoldering determination to get out. Now she puts her faith in her ability to pass unseen, but she still has her bedrock of determination: determination to survive, and to help others, especially young women who talk tough but are trapped in bad situations.
